Reflections on Centenary camp
Peter Hutton
St George's Day 2008
The year 2057
A grandfather tells his grandson/daughter about the
Wimbledon and Wandle District Camp in 2007
'Twas
the first May bank holiday weekend, when scouting was one hundred
years old,
We set up our camp on a
massive great field, with 500 youngsters all told
There was a tent the size
of a cathedral, where we met with each cub pack and troop,
It was amazing to see, so
many youngsters like me, from every single scout group
We were each given a
coloured wristband; there was a green elephant on mine,
When the man gave a shout,
I found the Explorer scout, holding the green elephant sign
He then lead us away, and
the rest of the day was packed full of activities and fun,
Considering the size, it
was really a surprise, just how smoothly it all seemed to run!
The activities we did were
amazing; we constantly seemed on the go,
There was zip wire and
shooting and archery, and preparing a slot for the show
We had people from a circus
who taught us, all sorts of wonderful skills ,
Like juggling, plate
spinning and mono cycling and clowning about on some stilts
For me the best thing I
remember, was scuba diving that we did in the pool,
At first it was really
quite scary, and the temperature was pretty cool ,
However, once I got used to
the water, it really did make my day,
And that's the great thing
about scouting; there's always someone who'll show you the way
The shows in the evening
were magic; there was even an Explorer rock band,
With singing and sketches
and laughter, the whole thing was incredibly grand,
I remember the men in the
top hats, who seemed to be running the show, ,
Explorer scouts dancing in
tutus, and we also all had a go
On Sunday came 200 Beavers,
to celebrate being one hundred years old,
With dignitaries from
Merton and Scouting, there were one thousand people all told
Now you know what I learnt
from that camp Jo(e), which helped me grow into a man?
It taught me that anything
is possible, if only you believe that you can.,
Whether you are just
starting out as a Beaver, or approaching your twilight years,
So long as you have the
scout spirit, any challenge need hold for you no fears!
