Diary Dates

District Commissioner

I am very grateful for all the kind letters, emails and telephone calls regarding the Centenary Dinner. It was a tremendous night and my thanks to all those who came and supported the evening. We will not make it an annual event but I am seriously thinking about holding another in November 2008. Your comments on this suggestion would be welcome.

St George's Day Awards
I am delighted to announce the following awards

    Silver Wolf

    • Dick Hooper, District Explorer Scout Administrator

    • Ted Mayhew, Assistant Cub Scout Leader 19th Wimbledon

    • John Young, District Treasurer

These three young men have given some 160 years to Scouting and thoroughly deserve this huge honour.

    Silver Acorn

    • Lesley Bixby, District Badge Secretary (elect) and goodness knows what else

    • Vicky Tullett, GSL 1st Merton Park

    • Clive Tullett, Explorer Scout Leader Merton Park Unit

    • Neil McLauchlan, District Explorer Scout Commissioner

    • Ian Wilkins, GSL 16th Morden

St George's Day - Sunday 22nd April
I have sent out the details for this event which are also available by clicking here.
Full and smart uniform should be worn which can include the centenary scarf.  Awards should be worn. Please remember only the latest award should be worn.
The Metropolitan Police and the London Borough of Merton are treating this as a major event in the calendar and have given this their full support.
Please note that Parents are welcome to come but precedence is given to young people and Leaders in the Church. Parents will have to wait till all are seated before given entry.

Centenary Camp planning continues a pace and with 5 weeks to go there is much to do.
Any queries to myself, Neil or Peter Hutton (activities)
Indications are that we are going to have lots of young people coming so please volunteer to do something, we have plenty of jobs that need to be done.
I am delighted that 17 members from Sutton District have volunteered to become part of the District Service Team (DST) and they will be carrying out all the support functions over the weekend. We hope to have some of the W&W Network to support them.

The first Nights Away permits are coming up for renewal, so, if your permit remains at the same level, you just need to get a form from Brian Beckley, add a new photo and send it off to Keith. If you want to upgrade then speak to Brian.

I have already been to 4 AGMs and I am delighted to see lots of young people, reports of further increases since census and all wearing centenary scarves.
Would all Groups who have not indicated their AGM date please do so as soon as possible. This ensures that I, or a Deputy, can attend on behalf of the District.

The District AGM is on Wednesday May 16th 7.45 for 8.00 at Kenneth Black DHQ (and - Yes it has been booked!!)   As usual the evening will conclude with presentation of Awards and refreshments.

St George's Day Parade and Service 22nd April

Full details are available by clicking here

The District is growing and we have something very special to celebrate in this our Centenary year, so let's have a really good turn-out.
Why not combine it with a visit to the Windmill to show your members where part of Scouting for Boys was written.

Trophies

If you win a trophy, please ensure that it goes to Cliff Condon as soon as possible.  He will arrange the engraving, including having the plates moved if necessary, and update the District records to ensure that the holders of each trophy are properly recorded.

District Store

Have all your members got everything they need for St George's Day and the Centenary Camp?  The Store re-opens after Easter on 19th April.  Beaver, Cub and Scout uniforms are available in all sizes but if you have any more unusual requests, please contact Brian Whalebone.
10 survival bags are still looking for a good home - £3 each - due to a duplicate delivery from Lancing.

Top Soil and Leaf Compost

Gardeners:  good top soil and compost available at Morden Hall DHQ.  Telephone Cliff Condon to arrange to collect.

Keys to Morden Hall DHQ

There have been various changes to the District Team and it is essential that we update the list of key holders for Morden Hall DHQ and ensure that everyone who needs keys has a set.

If you no longer need your DHQ keys, please return them to Cliff Condon as soon as possible.

If you hold a set of keys, please telephone Cliff to register them.

Beavers - Julia Doolan (DBSL)

The Bike Ride in Morden Hall Park was a success and the weather was kind to us.  We raised £93.00, which we have donated to the National Trust to be used locally in the park.

St Georges Day- Sunday 22nd April: Beavers will be marching with their Groups and everyone is to assemble at The Causeway on Wimbledon Common at 1pm.   Full Uniform to be worn. Any queries, please phone me or Clare Tweedley (3rd Mitcham).

Centenary Camp - Sunday 6th May.  All replies need to be in as soon as possible, so that the coaches can be ordered.
Beavers need to wear full uniform and bring a change of clothes. Food will be provided for the whole day. More information to follow.

Sports Day - 14th July. The Beavers will not be attending and we will arrange a fun day in 2008.

Next Meeting will be Wednesday 23rd May 2007.

Cubs - Michèle McNamara (ADC Cubs)

Almost 90 Cubs attended the adventure day held on 1st April at Frylands Wood taking part in various activities. The weather, thankfully, was fine and the Cubs seemed to enjoy themselves. My thanks to all the Leaders who organised this event and the Leaders/helpers who came along and helped make this such a successful day.

The next event after the centenary camp is, of course, the 7-aside football competition to be held at Raynes Park High School on 20th May. Please put this date in your diaries now, as entry forms will be issued in April and these need to be returned in time for the draw at the next CSLs' meeting.

Network - Chris Dean

Queen's Scouts from across GLSW will be parading at Windsor this month, and the experience will leave lasting memories.  For them and past generations of Queen's Scouts and King's Scouts we are arranging a County 'Muster' at KCS Wimbledon on Sunday 30 September at 3pm. This will include an act of rededication, presentation of badges and certificates, a few speeches no doubt, refreshments, and much reminiscing.
Invitations for the event will be mailed out during April, and it would help to have a comprehensive list of those eligible to attend.  GSLs and especially ESLs are requested to supply names and addresses to me as soon as possible - thanks.

The Scout Network is organising a 'Day of Activities' for all Explorer Scouts in GLSW on the Thames at Petersham & Ham Scouts HQ on Sunday 1 July. Most of the activities will be water-based, and there will be a BBQ. Further information and a booking form will be sent to ESLs shortly, but please make a note of the date now.

Plans are well advanced for the Scout Network Expedition to Nepal in 2008. For further information and to register an interest please click here.

Fellowship - Linda Vaudrey

Many thanks to those of you who came to the AGM on Sunday 25th March.  We apologise, once again, for having to cancel the meeting on the 18th March.

During April, help will be needed for St George's Day - Sunday 22nd April - Edge Hill - in the afternoon.  Please contact Rob if you are able to assist.

On Wednesday 25th April we shall be holding our Beetle Drive, organized by Jean and David, together with a fish and chip supper.  If you are planning to attend please let Linda know numbers and requests for fish by Friday 20th April - many thanks.

We shall be arranging a Spring Walk for Sunday 13th May.  Again please let Rob know if you will be interested in coming.

Best wishes to Mary White who is, we understand, making steady progress in Austria.

"Have you ever realised what the word 'Scout' spells and means? It is quite worth remembering:

    • Smartness

    • Courtesy

    • Obedience

    • Usefulness

    • Trustworthiness

I hope that every Scout will carry out those points in his daily work."
