Diary Dates

District Commissioner

We are steadily moving towards the camping season again. Can I remind you all that to go on any residential experience: indoors, campsite or green-field you MUST have a Nights Away permit holder involved in the planning and the experience itself.

I do not want to be in a position to refuse your camp, but if you do not have a Nights Away permit holder with you I will have to do so.

I would expect that by the end of May all Leaders expecting to be fast tracked for permit would have completed their assessment.
So Please get your permit before you start planning any Nights Away experience.

Plans for St George's Day are well underway and details can be found further down this edition of Links. You are all invited to attend in full and smart Scout uniform.

Please also note the new appointments procedures which is also in this newsletter, must be followed by everyone.

Fund Raising

Everyone seems to be after us to raise money at the moment - GIMME5, Red Nose Day, the Big Kick About etc.  Headquarters produce excellent resource packs to help you and fund raising can be fun for the young members, but don't forget that it is often their parents  who end up putting their hands in their pockets.  Could we have an exchange of ideas through these pages of ways to raise money from Joe Public and not from our members' families?

PS - my Scout Group is taking part in Gimme5 outside the Civic Centre in Morden on the morning of 12th March - come and see us!

Revised Appointments Procedure

Any queries about this procedure should be made to Joan Burgess or to Bob Prescott.

District AGM
Have you got the date in your diary?  Wednesday 11th May at the Wimbledon DHQ.

Morden Hall Park District HQ
There are now regular bookings on Sunday mornings and early Friday evenings in the Morden Hall DHQ but this does not mean that it cannot be used for Scouting purposes at the weekends.  If you want to run a sleepover or similar event, please make sure that you give a minimum of a month's notice so that our 'tenants' have time to make alternative arrangements.

The Headquarters can be used by Groups/Sections for evening meetings, day or weekend activities, sleepovers, camp fires or tent pitching practice.

Beavers - Andy Elgar

You should now have received the invitations to the Beaver Activity Afternoon on Sunday 20th March.  Please note that all replies need to be sent to Linda Vaudrey and not myself on this occasion.  Also, just to recap, if you don't have any Beaver Scouts either 7 Years or over attending, you & your Leaders/adults could still come and help to assist in running bases etc - if you would like to help, please do let me know.

Welcome to Sue Thornton and Samantha Powell who have offered to become leaders with the 20th Mitcham Colony.

Finally, the next Beaver Leaders meeting will be on 16th March at the Morden Hall DHQ, hope to see you all there.

Cubs - Michele MacNamara

Outdoor Adventure Day - 10th April  Frylands Wood, details will be issued shortly, final figures will be required by 24th March.

7 Aside Football competition - this has been booked at Raynes Park High School for Sunday 15th May, to be discussed more fully at the next CSL meeting but please put this date in your diary now, you will be required to enter by 30th April and make full payment by 11th May.

As we have now been merged for a year, do you have any opinions on how this is working? Are there any events you would like us to put on or drop? Please try and attend the next CSL meeting on 2nd March or advise one of the DCSLs of your opinions. We need your feedback.

Scouts - Paul Atkins

Our Handball Competition at the end of March went well and, thanks to Andy's cunning format, the odd number of 11 teams all got to play a good number of games with the general level of skill improved on last year. Congratulations to the 20th Mitcham who took home the trophy for the second year running after beating the 8th Morden in a very close final. Thanks to Andy & Richard for organising the event.

At the time of writing 2 Troops have responded to my request for thoughts and ideas on a District Older Scouts' event. I would be interested in knowing what the other 18 think before our next Leaders' meeting on the 23rd March.  We can then make some decisions on the format and date to allow planning to begin.  Please seek the views of your members as well as your leadership team so that we get a good cross-section of ideas.

Please make every effort to ensure that your Troop is represented at our meeting on Wednesday 23rd March at 8pm. The venue is the 8th Morden HQ in Yenston Close off Green Lane where the coffee and biscuits are always of a high quality.

Fellowship - Linda Vaudrey

I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye."
