District Commissioner My thanks to everyone who dealt with things while I was away. I am not sure I am glad to be back, as New Zealand is really an amazing place and my wife and I had a wonderful holiday. My thanks also to all those responsible for arranging St George's Day and to the staff at Tooting and Mitcham for letting us use their stadium. It was a new venue and that always creates a few problems but the service was good and the Band was superb. My congratulations to the following whose awards came through while I was away: Bar to the Medal of Merit
Medal of Merit
Chief Scouts Commendation
Please do make every effort to attend the District AGM on Wednesday 17th May at 7.45 at Kenneth Black DHQ. Bob Prescott |

Please note:
If you have recently changed positions in your Group and have not submitted a new AA form, then you need to complete the form and return it as soon as possible, together with your warrant, in order for this to be updated and to enable the training team to be advised of the change. Many thanks to the Leaders who return their forms promptly. Their efforts are much appreciated.
Band news - John Smith (ADC Band)
The Band had a busy St Georges
Day. We were joined by the 1st Wallington Band for our
Wimbledon & Wandle parade, and we then hurried to Sutton to join
1st Wallington for their own parade. Although we got a little
wet at both events I believe that the combined bands looked and
sounded pretty good. My thanks to Ian King and 1st Wallington
for joining us.
Having gained quite a few new
members in our own band recently, for many of them this was their
first parade. I would like to congratulate them, and all other
the band members on their turnout, marching and playing. Well
done to them all.

To all Leaders, please note that we are still hoping to recruit more members. If you would like us to visit one of your meetings please contact me. We will tell your Cubs/Scouts/Explorers something about the band, play some music and let them try the instruments. Hopefully we can provide something a little different for your programme and at the same time we may find some young people who are interested in joining us. |
Walkie Talkies
The District has purchased 6 walkie
talkies. They have a range of 5km and are available for use at
both Group and District events.
If you wish to borrow them, please
contact David Gould to arrange collection. The person in charge
of the event is responsible for ensuring that they are returned in
good working order.
District Store
The Store will be closed for half
term on Thursday 1 June.
District Headquarters
Please make sure that if you wish
to use the Morden Hall DHQ, you book it with Betty Cronk. If
you don't, you could find yourself double booked!
Also, the keys are for the sole use
of the holder and should never be passed to someone else without
checking with Betty first.
There is no charge for outside use of the headquarters so there is no income. If your Group uses it, a donation or an offer to undertake some work on the HQ will help keep it in good repair.
Sports Day
The only date that the Sutton Arena
is available for sports day is Sunday 17 September.
Is it worth going ahead with a booking? Please let David Gould have your views by Friday 12 May - 020 8395 1885 or e-mail baldygouldy@hotmail.co.uk
Wanted . . .
A good home for a filing cabinet. Contact Linda Vaudrey asap.
A 6ft x 4ft cupboard for the District Store. Contact Brian Whalebone if you can help.
District Equipment
The District owns a reasonable
quantity of equipment. At the moment it is stored in a variety
of places and the aim is to gather it all together and catalogue
it. Before we can do this, we need a Quartermaster. Could
you do this job? If so, please contact Cliff Condon.
Trophies
If you have won a trophy recently,
which needs engraving, please let Cliff Condon have it.

Over 100 Cubs had a fun packed day at this year's Outdoor Adventure Day at Frylands Wood. Activities included archery, rifle shooting, pioneering, back-woods cooking amongst many others. The weather was kind to us for the morning but unfortunately the downpour in the afternoon closed the assault course for the rest of the day. A big thank you to the many people who helped on the day and carried on during the wet weather and were still smiling at the end of the day!

Explorers - Neil McLauchlan (DESC) |
Many thanks to Neil Griffin, Chris Griffin, Ben Wong & Clive Tullett who sorted the sound system for St George's Day Parade.
We have many groups out undertaking award hikes over the next few weeks and we wish them well with their travels.
We are holding a District Explorer Scout Sports night & BBQ on Thursday 18th May at 7.30pm. This will be an evening of sports and silly games at the Old Wimbledonians, at the end of Somerset Avenue, Raynes Park. Cost is £2 per head there will be a BBQ with soft drinks.

Network - Chris Dean (CSNC) |
Firstly, congratulations to Simon Keen who has qualified as a RYA Senior Instructor - Simon will be taking charge of our Network 'Evening Sail' at Wimbledon Park Lake on 27 June. Further information is available from Simon or myself.
Congratulations also to Ed Hackett and Ryan Evans, who completed the Annapurna circuit in April, and will be reporting back on this fantastic adventure at some point.
The GLSW Scout Network Barn Dance on April 22 was well supported by members from Kingston, Croydon, Sutton, and Kent. 100 enthusiasts danced remorselessly to the Bonabrill Band until midnight when it was time to head homewards and grab some sleep before attending St George's Day parades - this year the County Network Standard was paraded at Sutton.
On 30 March I was privileged to be at St James's Palace for the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Awards to approximately 300 young people, including two of our Network members, Kate Brown and Emma Wilson. There are several more awards in the pipeline, which is great news. On Thursday 1 June from 8pm at Bow Lane Scout Centre we are holding the first 'drop in' clinic for anyone wanting guidance on how to achieve the DofE Award or indeed how to get started. All are welcome - Explorers and Network.
In late August two hike groups will be heading to Llandovery in South Wales, and will undertake their Gold 'practice' and ' qualifying' expeditions. If you are quick there are still a few places left - either register on www.glswscouts.org.uk/network or phone me direct.
The Scout Network has been asked to help at 'Twickeree' in Marble Hill Park, Richmond from June 23-25, and we shall be calling on members from all parts of the County to assist. We will be instantly visible, wearing our new polo shirts, again visit our website for details of availability and cost.
The Scout Network Conference 2006 will be at Walton Firs Scout Camp, Cobham, on Sunday 2 July at 10.30am, and all Explorer Scouts aged 17 and over have been invited. We look forward to meeting you all, and giving you a flavour of Network Scouting at its very best !
