Diary Dates

District Commissioner

Many congratulations to the 1st Lower Morden who had a very successful launch of their new Group. It was a fabulous day and one which gave the new Group a start with so much opportunity and promise for the future.

My thanks to all those who made it such a great day.

My thanks also to all those in 4th and 7th Morden who guided these Groups in the past to enable this merger to happen; particularly Allan Woolsey and David Cooper the former GSLs of the Groups.

I am sure we all wish Andy Hayward all the very best as he starts his new role as GSL.

Several awards were made at the celebration:

Medal of Merit for Outstanding Services

  • Sue Willey, Chairperson of 4th Morden and now 1st Lower Morden

Chief Scouts Commendation for Good Services

  • Janet Cain, Booking Secretary Bow Lane

  • Nicky Hayward, BSL

  • Bob McNally, ACSL

The Groups made other presentations to Brian Whalebone, John Dye and Allan Woolsey for their hard work on behalf of 4th Morden.

Please put Saturday 18th March 2006 in your diaries as we will be taking part in an County wide Adult Recruitment Day entitled "Join the Adventure". Much has to be done in our District to get our plans underway. Every Group will be involved and every Group could benefit. The Development Committee will be discussing this shortly and will try to get initial thoughts to you as soon as possible.

Please also put the annual "All Leaders" meeting  on Wednesday 25th January 06 in your diaries. I hope to have the Insurance Manager from Gilwell with us to go through the current Scout Insurance and what it does and does not cover. Learning from last year, there will be no sectional meetings on the night and there will be an extended time to mingle and mix with other leaders.

Arrangements for census figures and returns will also be sent to GSLs as soon as possible.

I am delighted to report that Eric Hayward as agreed to become the Chairman of the District. Eric brings with him a great deal of Scouting experience and forty plus years in a Solicitors Office. Eric will begin to take the reigns over from John Smith in the coming weeks ahead and I would ask you to give your full support to Eric as he begins this important role. We now have to source and recruit a District Treasurer as a matter of urgency. If you know of any suitable people that we could ask, please let Eric, John Smith or me know as soon as possible.

Bob Prescott

District Chairman
As you may be aware I have asked Bob to find a replacement for me as District Chairman in order that I can spend more time with the District Band.  I am delighted to report that Eric Hayward has agreed to take on the role.  Many of you will know Eric as he has been involved in Scouting in the District for many years.  I would like to take this opportunity of wishing him every success in the position, and I am confident that the District will be in safe and capable hands.

In the period that I have been District Chairman, firstly for Wandle and then for Wimbledon and Wandle District, we have of course been through the major changes brought about by the merger process.  I have enjoyed my time as Chairman during this interesting period and would like to thank you all for your support and friendship.  In particular I must offer my sincere thanks to those members of the Executive Committee for supporting me, and for all their help and hard work for the District.

John Smith

Appointments Sub Committee - Joan Burgess
June to September

Warrants Agreed

"Working with Group"
19 certificates have been issued during the Summer period.

CRB Clearance
GSLs should note that, following lengthy discussion with Gilwell, it has been confirmed that CRB clearance is, at the moment, taking anything up to three months. This of course means that even if a new Leader completes the initial training the issue of a warrant could take up to five months. Should you have any possible prospective new Leaders, it would be very wise to ensure that the CRB form is completed and submitted immediately even if the AA Form is submitted at a later date.

Jamboree 2007
Could Leaders please begin the process of considering young people to represent the District at the World Scout Jamboree.  Applications forms are available from Keith Daly or Bob Prescott. The District would like to fill at least 12 places. Participants should be between the ages of 14 to 18 at the time of the Jamboree (Aug 2007) This will be a fantastic experience for those taking part and if you would like an idea of what a Jamboree is all about, talk to the Scouts and Leaders of 22nd Wimbledon who were at Eurojam.

World Centenary Official Uniform Badge
A mandatory uniform badge has been issued which should be worn from now until the end of 2007.  All Sections of the Movement will wear it - not just in the UK but around the world.  Cost £1.  Place your orders with your badge secretaries now.
A metal pin version is also available for £1.

For £3, you can buy a circular World Jamboree blanket badge; a key ring costs £2.25; there is a Spode plate for £20 and a Spode mug which costs £10.  All can be ordered through the District Store.

Store closed
The store will be closed half term week - Thursday 27 October.

CRB Forms
Scout HQ have issued a warning that there are some 'rogue' CRB forms about.  These "rogue" forms are distinguishable as follows: on the top left of the front page of the application you will see, instead of the name of The Scout Association, the name of a company entitled, LIFESTYLE CARE PLC located in London N12.
While I'm sure that none will have got beyond District to the Groups - please check if you have a stock and make sure that none go out to prospective Leaders.

The following training is available during the next few months. Anyone can do the modules and all are welcome.

District Camp

By now, all Groups should be aware that the DC is booking Blacklands Farm for the May Day Bank Holiday 2007 for District Camp.
Please put this date in your diaries.  Not only will it be the first camp for the whole of Wimbledon and Wandle District, it will be our way of celebrating Scouting's centenary.  Make sure your Group is there and let's make it a camp to remember!

Cubs - Michèle McNamara (ADC Cubs)

Details regarding the swimming gala on November 19th should be issued shortly. Please remember to make sure that all the cubs entering are capable of swimming the race distance. Every year some poor cub has to be rescued because he or she is incapable of completing their race. It is your responsibly as leaders to ensure this does not happen.

Next CSL meeting is November 9th; please make an effort to attend or if you are unable to do this at least let me have a report for inclusion with the minutes.

Scouts - Paul Atkins (ADC General Duties)

Our Section meeting in September was not well attended with only 6 Troops represented. The key subject under discussion was the Incident Hike on 6th November and it was agreed by those present to proceed with the event. Details have since been circulated to Troops by email or post so everybody should have seen a copy by now. If you haven't, please contact me and I will re-send so that your Scouts do not miss out on the activity.
Entries should be with Andy Edmonds by 23rd October. Once we have a confirmed number of teams, the route can be finalised and advised to Troops. If you or your Scouts have any questions, please ask.

Thanks to all those who volunteered to provide questions for the Quiz on Wednesday 16th November, please let Paul have them by the end of October - along with the answers!
The venue is to be confirmed but will hopefully be the Upper Hall at Edge Hill we used last year.

The Swimming Gala will be a joint event at Morden Baths with the Cub section on the evening of Saturday 19th November. A list of events is being finalised to fit the time available and will be advised shortly so that teams can be formed.

It is hoped that we can arrange a section Christmas meal; as soon as we have some details they will be circulated.

The next Scouters' meeting is now confirmed for the Morden Hall DHQ on Monday 9th January, please put it in your brand new 2006 diary when you get it.

Explorers - Neil McLauchlan (DESC)

Time for another new Unit year and I am pleased to have received good reports about the various Summer Expeditions.

The County Explorer Scout Night Hike is on the weekend of Saturday 15th to Sunday 16th October. Application forms and payment needs to be with me Friday 7th October. Let's have a good turnout again this year please.

We have been asked to help at Scout Incident Hike on Sunday 6th November. We are needed to run a checkpoint. Please give this your full support when we have full details.

There has been a change around at the Merton Park Unit. Clive Tullett has become the AESL and has handed the ESL role to Tommy Briggs. We all wish them well in their new roles, thanks to Clive for running the Unit so well for so long. Andrew Grimme has now stepped back from his AESL role but will be available for help from time to time. Thanks Andrew for many years of help.

Our next Leaders meeting is Monday 14th Nov 8.00pm in the back room at the Kenneth Black Hall, Worple Road.

Network - Chris Dean (CSNC)

A large group of Scout Network members from GLSW spent the first weekend of September at the 79th Gilwell Reunion, running one of the 'activity' bases and soaking up the ambience of the occasion as well as the glorious sunshine. We even had our own barman, Anthony Ginty of the Queen's Scout Working Party, who ensured we didn't go thirsty !

On September 5 we held a 'Moving On' session at Bow Lane for older Explorers from Wimbledon & Wandle, and this was quite well attended. We shall be repeating the 90 minute 'training' early next year, and hope this will result in a surge of recruits to Network.

The Volleyball and Rugby 7's competitions were well contested at Twickenham on September 11. There were only two teams for the rugby and they played 3 games, which W & W won 2-1 over a combined Richmond (Merlins) and Croydon (Romans) team. All players are asked to make themselves available if at all possible for the Middlesex Sevens next May -watch the County website for details. The volleyball competition was won by a team from Isfield in Sussex. The runners-up were Double Dragon ESU from Sutton.

Ian Newbery (ACC, Explorer Scouts) and myself travelled to Lithuania on September 23 on a fact-finding mission for next year's County Explorer Belt Expedition. Information and application forms will be available at the beginning of October with a 'roadshow' later in the month. Lithuanian Scouters will join us for the training weekend in February.

Future events to note include the Sedan Chair Rally at Tolmers (October 21-23) - why not make up a team - the Mystery Investiture on November 19, and a County Queen's Scout badge presentation on December 9. Details of the Queen's Scout / D of E Gold Award 4-day expedition next April are on the website - www.glswscouts.org.uk/network

Fellowship - Linda Vaudrey

Thank you

The 1st Lower Morden Group would like to thank all those who sent good luck messages to us in respect of our inauguration on the 17th September. We would also like to thank Bob, Laurence, John and the District Team for all of their support too. It wouldn't have been possible without them.

If you think we can help you or you can help us then please do get in contact with us - we are here to play an active part in the District and to 'shout for Scouting' in the Lower Morden area.

I would also personally like to thank all of the 4th & 7th's management committees and leadership teams for all of their hard work and support. The reason that this merge was a success was because of their efforts. Thanks guys.
